More Than $12,000 Raised at the First Ever Bell Works Truck Pull

September 18, 2019

Standing by the phrase, “Jersey Strong,” the first-ever Bell Works Truck Pull was a major success! Hosted by Lowy’s Moving Service, a Wheaton World Wide Moving agent, and presented by WorkWave, the pull took place in Holmdel, New Jersey on Thursday, September 12 and raised $12,540 to support our hunger relief and food rescue programs.

BellWorksTruckPull2019 (245).jpgThe teams that came out to pull and support were not there to play around. Some of the participants included Bell Works tenants WorkWave, JGSiCims and OceanFirst, who were all jockeying for building bragging rights, and a Move For Hunger supporter based outside of Bell Works, Organize Your Space. With some serious competition and a little rain to dramatize the spectacle that is pulling giant Lowy’s truck, nothing stood in the way of the WorkWave squad, who came to cement their impact on the pull. Not only was WorkWave the event’s title sponsor, but they were also crowned truck pull champion, as one of their two teams claimed the win with a finish time of 17.8 seconds.

All the teams partcipating really gave their all. iCims and OceanFirst were surprise contenders, throwing their hats in the ring just as the event was getting underway but came ready to compete. JGS brought some man-power with them, having three teams at the event, as well as to the Move For Hunger mission, handing over non-perishable food they collected leading up to the event. Children’s cheers could be heard for miles as the loudest supporters from Organize Your Space motivated their moms from the sidelines.

Special thanks also go out to our host, Lowy’s Moving Service. As the founding member of Move For Hunger, Lowy’s has delivered nearly 490,000 pounds of food to food banks and pantries throughout Monmouth and Ocean counties over the past 10 years, which is the equivalent of 408,000 meals.

We hope you had as much fun as we did. Thank you again to everyone who pulled together to help us fight hunger in New Jersey and all across the United States!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
