Minnesota Employee Relocation Council Holds Food Drive

December 10, 2019

Can one, can all! The Minnesota Employee Relocation Council (MERC) decided to give back during this year’s Fall Education Event at Bauhaus Brew Labs on October 8. With the help of our partners at Altair Global, MERC collected non-perishable food donations and showed off their creativity by constructing buildings out of the cans and boxes they received.

In just under five hours, MERC collected 240 pounds of food, which is enough to provide 200 meals!

Our good friends over at Beltmann Relocation Group of Minneapolis lent a helping hand, as they volunteered to pick up all of the donations and bring them over to Second Harvest Heartland West. Since joining our network, this Beltmann branch has delivered nearly 124,000 pounds of food to their local food banks. The teamwork everyone displayed to make this food drive a success really make us so proud!

More than 504,000 people in Minnesota are facing hunger, including 1 in 8 children. We are so thankful for events like they help raise awareness about the problem and also provide immediate assistance to people who are struggling. Thank you to those at MERC, Altair Global and Beltmann Relocation Group, for dedicating your time and doing your part.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
