Mesa Moving & Storage Donates a Truckload of Boxes to the Food Bank of the Rockies

April 1, 2020

Over the past three weeks, the Food Bank of the Rockies has distributed 2x the amount of food than they typically would. So many people are in need of assistance as a result of the COVID-19 Pandemic, and the Food Bank was quickly running out of the boxes they use to package their emergency food supplies.

On March 26, the Food Bank of the Rockies - Western Slope contacted us and asked if any of our partners would be willing to donate moving boxes so that they could continue to provide food & household goods to people in Western Colorado who are struggling right now. We immediately got in touch with the team from Mesa Moving & Storage in Grand Junction, CO, who graciously agreed to deliver a shipment of boxes the very next day.

"We have always taken our responsibility to the people of Western Colorado seriously," said Susan Richards, Mesa Moving's Marketing Coordinator. "During this uncertain time, we continue to fearlessly step forward and provide essential moving services to the people and businesses in our communities."

"The Mesa Team was excited to help out, "Richards said. "We’ve been hearing on the news how busy the food bank has been as the need for food has increased. We’ve come to know that The Food Bank of the Rockies serves all of Western Colorado, not just Grand Junction. Mesa was glad to get the call and happy to help our neighbors."

Nearly 400,000 people, including 1 in 8 children, in the region serviced by the Food Bank of the Rockies were food insecure before the Covid-19 Pandemic devastated the economy. That number has increased significantly over the past few weeks, and will likely continue to rise for the remainder of this crisis. The Food Bank of the Rockies and its affiliate pantries, shelters, and soup kitchens are serving people in record numbers and we are so proud to work with companies, like Mesa Moving & Storage, who are doing whatever they can to help their neighbors during this extremely difficult time.

The COVID-19 Pandemic has left a massive economic impact and has drastically increased the need for emergency food assistance nationwide. Move For Hunger is actively searching for ways to meet the demand, but we need your help.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
