Mergenthaler Transfer & Storage Takes Center Stage

November 1, 2018

Our goal is to feed 2 million people in 2018. Without the help of our network of movers and all the creative ways they take part in food drives, this goal would be impossible to achieve. That's why we were so excited to hear about the unique event that Mergenthaler Transfer & Storage of Salt Lake City had planned.

As the official sponsor and mover of Ballet West, Mergenthaler was invited to attend the company's final dress rehearsal of Beauty and the Beast on October 24. With the invitation also extended to their friends, family, and other guests, Mergenthaler thought it would be a great time to host a food drive for the community surrounding their Salt Lake City office. So how did they do it? Every attendee was asked to donate a canned food item as their cost of admission.

By the time everyone got to their seats to watch the show, 440 pounds of food had been collected! That's enough to provide 366 meals for families Utah families in need. Mergenthaler expressed their excitement and gratitude on their Facebook page:

"Thank you Ballet West for a performance of Beauty & the Beast with our friends and family. It was spectacular! Thank you to those that joined us and for bringing your donations to support Move For Hunger and Utah Food Bank!"

More than 382,000 people in Utah are food insecure, including 1 in 7 children. It makes us so happy to see Mergenthaler Transfer & Storage and Ballet West joining forces to fight hunger. Thank you so much for your hard work and for taking the time to make a difference in your community.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
