Despite Frigid Weather, Mergenthaler Transfer & Storage Fills-A-Truck to Fight Hunger

November 21, 2017

Mergenthaler Transfer and Storage, of Helena, Montana held its third annual Fill-A-Truck food drive on November 4.

Despite the freezing cold weather and snow-covered grounds, the Merganthaler Transfer and Storage staff was eager to set up their truck in front of Van's Thriftway Foodstore. The food drive ran from 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM, in 10-degree weather, but the cold did not stop the crew or the members of the community from filling the truck up with donations!

The community was encouraged to donate nutritious non-perishable foods, such as canned beans, vegetables, and fruits, low sodium soups, quinoa, rice, whole grain pasta, oatmeal, and unsalted nuts, for the upcoming holiday season. The people of Helena were extremely generous in their donations and helped Mergenthaler reach their goal of filling the truck! Nearly 2,400 pounds of food were collected -- enough to provide 2,000 meals!MergenthalerHelenaFallFoodDrive2017 (8).jpg

The holiday season is looking brighter for the members of their community. All of the donations were delivered to Helena Food Share, which provided meals for more than 8,000 people last year, 1 in 3 of which were children

Merganthaler Transfer and Storage has collected more than 45,000 pounds of food since joining the Move For Hunger network in 2013. Thank you to the entire team for taking the initiative to fight against hunger and help your neighbors in need.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
