May 2020 Community of the Month: Gilman Square Apartments

June 4, 2020

Move For Hunger is proud to announce that Gilman Square Apartments, a Security Properties Residential community, has been named our Community of the Month, presented by Kastle, for May 2020!

Gilman Square Apartments joined our Multi-Family Program in November of 2017, but last month they collected more non-perishable food donations than they ever have before. In May, residents at the Issaquah, WA property donated 281 lbs. of food during the move out process, which is the equivalent of 234 meals. All of the donations were delivered to Northwest Harvest, courtesy of our friends at Lincoln Moving & Storage.

That surge in donations could not have come at a better time, as the COVID-19 pandemic has increased the need for emergency food assistance nationwide.

"In a crisis like we are experiencing now, with millions of people out of work, the need is greater," said Iris Trutsch, Gilman Square's Property Manager. "Some people are now finding themselves in unfamiliar territory not knowing where their next meal will come from."

SecurityPropertiesResdiential_logo.jpgDespite all of the social disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, our growing network of Multi-Family apartment communities has still been rescuing food from their residents during the move-out process. Our model provides members of our Multi-Family Program with a simple, sustainable, and safe way to reduce food waste and fight hunger every time a resident moves. Trutsch acknowledged that it took some time for the program to catch on, but the amount of food they have been receiving has been progressively increasing.

"When we first introduced the Move For Hunger program we received some small donations," she said. "Over the past couple of years, we have received bags full and, most recently, boxes."

Being a part of the program has had a positive impact on Gilman Square's team & residents, because everyone involved knows they are making a real difference in their community.

"Move For Hunger provides flyers and bags, which we include in our move-out packet to inspire our residents to donate," Trutsch said. "It communicates the importance of giving to those in need and how their donation impacts the community."

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
