March 2020 Mover of the Month: Brandon Moving & Storage

April 7, 2020

Each month, we highlight one of the moving companies in our network for their extraordinary commitment to fighting hunger in their community. We are excited to announce that Brandon Moving & Storage, a Bekins Van Lines agent, has been named our Mover of the Month for March 2020!

Brandon Moving & Storage has been one of the most consistent supporters of Move For Hunger over the past 3+ years. Since 2017, the North Little Rock, AR company has made more than 30 deliveries to food banks/pantries in their community. Most of those trips were to drop off donations from food drives that they themselves organized. So it came as no surprise us that Brandon Moving & Storage was doing whatever they could to help a local food pantry meet the increased demand for assistance caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Last month, Brandon Moving & Storage delivered more than 36,000 lbs. of food to the Community Action Program of Central Arkansas (CAPCA), which is the equivalent of 30,000 meals.

CAPCA sources much of its food from the Arkansas Foodbank, and getting tens of thousands of pounds of supplies to their pantry is a big job. Brandon Moving & Storage, however, has the trucks and an experienced crew that makes it a whole lot easier.

According to Don Henson, Brandon Moving's Partner & Managing Director, their close relationship with CAPCA is a direct result of the food drives we have organized together.

"CAPCA was recommended as a place that could use extra donations because of the volume and reach of their service needs," Henson said. "So we began holding food drives and delivering the donations to CAPCA. Watching them serve so many, we decided to dedicate ourselves to them anyway we could. So trucks, man power, and food related efforts have become our small contribution to helping them perform miracles."

Henson says that organizing food drives is "therapeutic." Although he has helped with dozens of events over the years, there's one food drive that has always stood out.

"Once I helped do their Christmas distribution, I was hooked," he remembered. "Personally handing out over 600 turkeys and watching them distribute boxes of food will be a memory that is etched in my mind forever. When you meet the people, when you see the compassion of the team at  CAPCA...who wouldn't want help?"

Brandon Moving & Storage has delivered nearly 113,000 lbs. all-time and provided 94,000 meals to their neighbors in need. Henson says that, for his company, giving is just as important as moving.

"When we wrote our Vision Statement, we included meaningful service to the community," he explained. "Revenue in any business is important, but nothing is more important than service to others. Every day, and more so now than ever, our neighbors, friends, community, and society in general needs compassion and some form of a hand up."

The number of people seeking assistance is skyrocketing, and there is no end in sight. Brandon Moving & Storage plans to continue to leverage the connections they have forged through their involvement with Move For Hunger to find ways to help people in Arkansas who are struggling. Henson offered some advice to his peers in the moving industry who may want to help during this crisis, but aren't sure where to begin.

"Post on social media that you are willing to help with transportation or other needs during this crisis," he said. "Also, go to pages of organizations and offer help in a comment or private message. Don't set rules and conditions of your help, just make others aware of your willingness to help and how you can safely provide that help. Apartment offices are willing to set up donation boxes at the office. Following the basic food collection guidelines that Move for Hunger set for us in the beginning is very helpful and still works today. Think outside the box and follow through."

In addition to the award, Brandon Moving & Storage will also be receiving Move For Hunger truck decals for their entire fleet.

Congratulations to Brandon Moving & Storage on this much-deserved recognition! Thank you for helping us fight hunger during this difficult time.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
