March 2018 Mover of the Month: Apex Moving + Storage

April 18, 2018

Each month, we highlight one of the moving companies in our network for their extraordinary commitment to fighting hunger in their community. We are excited to announce that Apex Moving + Storage an Atlas Van Lines agent, is our Mover of the Month for March 2018!

Members of our network often tell us that they want to host a food drive, but they aren't quite sure where they should hold the event. We have plenty of suggestions: at your office, grocery stores, gyms, libraries, etc. One of our favorite locations, however, is a local school. In addition to being a great way to teach children about the importance of giving back, school food drives also tend to bring in tons of donations.

VanleerElementarySchoolFoodDrive2018_ApexMoving+Storage (3).jpgSince November, Apex Moving + Storage has held food drives at four schools in the communities they serve. From November 6-17, they partnered with Brown’s Chapel Elementary and LaVergne Primary School to hold Thanksgiving food drives. Each school held a competition between classrooms to inspire students to bring in donations. The classes that collected the most food received rewards, including gift cards and a pizza party. Needless to say, the incentives worked: the two schools collected 7,000 lbs. of food combined, which is enough to provide 5,800 meals

“We were so happy with the results,” said Angie Hane of Apex Moving + Storage. “The schools got really involved. I was told one parent brought in more than 400 cans and that some parents were ordering canned goods from Amazon and having them sent to the school. We are just super excited about the outcome.”

After the success of those two events, Apex Moving + Storage kept the momentum going in December. The movers partnered with Barfield Elementary School to collect more than 3,500 lbs. of food to help fight hunger during the holidays. And in March, Apex + Moving Storage helped the students at Reeves-Rogers Elementary School collect nearly 1,000 lbs. of food.

There are nearly 380,000 people in Middle Tennessee who are food insecure, including 1 in 5 children. Apex Moving + Storage understands how many families in their community are struggling, and they believe it's their duty to help in any way they can. Since joining our network in 2011, Apex Moving + Storage has delivered 11,900 lbs. of food to local food banks/pantries, enough to provide 9,900 meals.

“The Move for Hunger program is a natural extension of what we at Apex want to do for our local and national communities,” says Chris Jones Apex Moving + Storage's Vice President of Sales. “Hunger is an epidemic and is prevalent in the inner city and rural areas.  We feel blessed to be able to participate in the Move for Hunger program and create awareness of how everyone can help.”

In addition to the award, Apex Moving + Storage will also be receiving a Move For Hunger hand truck, courtesy of Victory Packaging and Move For Hunger truck decals for their entire fleet.

Congratulations to Apex Moving + Storage on this much-deserved recognition. Thank you for commitment to reducing food waste and fighting hunger in the Volunteer State!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
