Maffucci Moving and Storage Helps Connect Long Island Cares and Local Food Pantry

May 10, 2019

One of the simplest ways for our network of moving companies to assist us in our fight to end hunger is by becoming a transportation partner to their local food bank and/or pantry. That’s exactly why we were so excited that we were able to connect Maffucci Moving and Storage, a Bekins agent, with Long Island Cares!

As one of the biggest food banks serving Nassau & Suffolk Counties, Long Island Cares provides nutritional food and support services for a network of more than 580 community-based member agencies, including food pantries, soup kitchens, emergency shelters, child care programs, disability organizations, veterans’ services programs, and more. Unfortunately, they don't always have the resources to be able to deliver food donations from their warehouse to their three satellite food pantry sites in Freeport, Lindenhurst, and Huntington Station. Since each of these locations sees upwards of 2,000 individuals each month, it’s important that they distribute their donations as quickly as possible. That’s when Maffucci Moving and Storage stepped in to help.

Maffucci Moving and Storage has begun making bi-weekly trips to deliver the abundance of food donations from the Long Island Cares headquarters to the South Shore Service Center in Lindenhurst. On April 15, they delivered more than 2,400 lbs. of food and on May 1, they delivered nearly 2,250 lbs. That means that in just two trips they have already helped transport nearly 5,000 lbs. of food, which will provide more than 3,900 meals! More than 155,000 people on Long Island struggle with food insecurity, including 1 in 8 children.

THANK YOU to Judd Levine and everyone at Maffucci Moving and Storage for stepping up to the plate and helping your neighbors in need!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
