Lang Realty Holds 6th Annual Holiday Food Drive

January 2, 2019

Move For Hunger organized nearly 1,000 food drives all across the United States and Canada last year. That is 200 more than 2017, and a new record for a single year!

LangRealtyHolidayPartyFoodDrive2018_JowBonnieAndSon.jpegHow did we do it? Some of the success can be attributed to the continued growth of our network. Introducing our new Featured Campaigns certainly helped to increase engagement among our existing partners. But much of the credit belongs to longtime allies, like Lang Realty, who have been committed to fighting hunger for years.

For the sixth year in a row, Lang Realty hosted a food drive to help provide holiday meals for families facing food insecurity in South Florida. From November 26-December 12, all 11 of Lang Realty's offices collected donations of canned goods, pasta, peanut butter, cereal, and other non-perishable items for their neighbors in need.

Lang Realty's food drives have always been successful. In 2017, for example, they collected nearly 500 lbs. of food. This year, however, they took it to a whole new level. The 11 offices combined to collect more than 2,600 lbs. of food, which is the equivalent of 2,000 meals!

None of it would been possible without A-1 Moving & Storage of Jupiter, an Atlas Van Lines agent, Beltmann Relocation Group of Ft. Lauderdale/Pompano Beach 3, and Joe Bonnie & Son Moving & Storage, a National Van Lines agent, who generously donated collection boxes and volunteered to pick up/deliver all of the donations to the food bank.

More than 706,000 people in South Florida are food insecure, including 1 in 5 children. Food drives are not a solution to this crisis, but they can help keep the shelves stocked during lean times and raise awareness about the problem. There's still a lot of work ahead of us, but we want to thank everyone from Lang Realty and all of our participating movers for doing your part. Food drives like this remind us what the season of giving is all about!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
