Kroger, Michigan Moving Companies Hold 8 Fill-A-Truck Food Drives on the Same Day!

May 14, 2018

Members of our network in Michigan held Fill-A-Truck food drives at 8 Kroger grocery stores throughout the state on April 28. Kroger proposed the statewide campaign as a way to build excitement for the first annual Detroit Truck Pull on May 6, of which Kroger was also the presenting sponsor.

The four participating moving companies -- Palmer Moving Services, an Atlas Van Lines agent, University Moving & Storage, Stevens Worldwide Van Lines, and All Around Moving, a National Van Lines agent -- made sure we had a truck parked outside of each store. Employees PalmerKrogerFoodDrive2018 (8).jpgfrom the companies were also on hand at their respective locations to help collect donations and encourage shoppers to help us fill each of the trucks with non-perishable food! More than 5,300 lbs. of food was collected overall - which will provide 4,450 meals to their neighbors in need!

“We were so excited to partner with Move For Hunger on these food drives to support our Zero Hunger Zero Waste initiative,” said Rachel Hurst, Corporate Affairs Manager for The Kroger Co. of Michigan. “We are committed to donating more meals each and every day in the communities we live and serve.”

Nearly 1.5 million people in Michigan, including 1 in 6 children, are food insecure. Thank you to Kroger for the inspiration, and to all of the members of our network who helped make this massive food drive a reality!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
