July 2018 Mover of the Month: AMS Relocation

August 23, 2018

Each month, we highlight one of the moving companies in our network for their extraordinary commitment to fighting hunger in their community. We are excited to announce that AMS Relocation, a Bekins agent, has been named our Mover of the Month for July 2018!

For nearly 6 years, AMS Relocation has been helping us reduce food waste and fight hunger throughout California's Bay Area. During that time, they have delivered more than 11,000 lbs. of food to the Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara & San Mateo Counties -- which is enough to provide more than 9,300 meals. What's most impressive about AMS Relocation, however, is their consistency. It seems like every month they are dropping off 200-300 lbs. of food! That's a testament to their crew, who must be reminding every single customer to donate their food when they move.

AMS Relocation has also volunteered to help out with their share of food drives, too! And in July they took on their biggest challenge since becoming a member of our network in 2012. Our partners from Prodesse Property Group wanted to hold Shark Week Food Drives at all 46 of their multi-family properties in California. We were, of course, thrilled to hear that they wanted to include all of their locations, but it did present a logistical challenge. Would we able to find movers to drop off boxes and pick up the donations from multiple locations during their busy season? Our events team thought we would need more than one company to handle this massive food drive, so we were shocked and ecstatic when AMS Relocation offered to do it all themselves! Thanks to their generosity, nearly 1,500 lbs. of canned tuna, salmon, and other non-perishable goods were delivered to the food bank during the hungriest time of year.

This is the second time that AMS Relocation has been honored for their commitment to our cause. In 2015, they delivered more than 8,500 lbs. of food and were named our Bekins Mover of the Year. Something tells us this won't be the last award they take home!

In addition to the award, AMS Relocation will also be receiving a special gift from Victory Packaging and Move For Hunger truck decals for their entire fleet. Congratulations to AMS Relocation on this much-deserved recognition. Thank you for commitment to reducing food waste and fighting hunger in the Golden State!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
