J. Barber Moving & Storage Fills a Truck with 1,700 LBS. of Food!

October 16, 2018

For millions of Americans, fall is football season. Here at Move For Hunger, autumn is food drive season. Our friends from J. Barber Moving & Storage, a National Van Lines agent, found a way to combine the two.

On Friday, October 5, J. Barber Moving & Storage held a Stuff-the-Truck food drive at Courtland High School's football game. Attendees were challenged to donate enough non-perishable food to fill the entire trailer! As an incentive, anyone who donated items received a raffle ticket for a chance to win a special prize!

J. Barber Moving & Storage's goal was to collect 600 lbs. of food, but thanks to the generosity of their community, they nearly tripled that! More than 1,700 lbs. of non-perishable food was donated, which is the equivalent of 1,400 meals! All of the donations were delivered to the Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank, which services a region where more than 32,000 people face hunger every day.

This event was a strong reminder of what happens when local organizations come together to help fight food insecurity! Thank you to J. Barber Moving & Storage and to everyone who donated for providing meals to your neighbors in need!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
