Hasson Company Realtors Fight Hunger During the Holidays

February 28, 2020

For many people, the holidays are a joyous time, but Hasson Company Realtors realizes this may not be true for everyone. That's why we worked together to hold a Season of Giving Food Drive during Hasson's holiday party on December 21.

The theme of the night was “River of Lights,” and attendees were encouraged to donate "light" foods such as low sodium, low sugar, gluten-free, and dairy-free food items. Nearly 120 pounds of food was donated in just a few hours, which provided more than 90 meals to their neighbors in need!. Our friends from Chipman Relocation & Logistics volunteered to pick up all of the donatins and delivered them to Oregon Food Bank West.

There are more than 510,000 people in Oregon who are food insecure, including 1 in 5 children. Thank you so much to everyone at Hasson Company Realtors, and to the crew at Chipman Relocation & Logistics, for spreading some joy during the holidays!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
