Harbor Steps Apartments Helping to Fight Hunger in Seattle

January 8, 2018

In their first full year as a member of our Multi-Family Program, Harbor Steps Apartments of Seattle rescued more than 600 lbs. of food, enough to provide 500 meals to their neighbors in need.

Harbor Steps Apartments was one of the 15 Equity Residential Northwest locations in the greater Seattle area that joined our network last December. Each property helps reduce food waste and fight hunger in the region by encouraging its residents to donate their food when they move. By providing thousands of renters with an opportunity to share what they can spare, Equity Residential Northwest and Harbor Steps Apartments are creating a sustainable solution to an urgent problem.

Our friends from ABODA of Seattle help make this partnership possible by volunteering to pick up the donations from each property and deliver it to a local food bank. In 2017, ABODA made seven trips from Harbor Steps Apartments to Northwest Harvest.

More than 915,000 people, including 1 in 6 children, in Washington state are food insecure. Thank you to the staff and residents at Harbor Steps Apartments, Equity Residential, and ABODA for working together to make a difference in your community.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
