Hansen Bros. Moving & Storage Donates More Than 1,500 LBS. of Rice

April 9, 2020

Seattle was the initial epicenter of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States. As non-essential businesses and schools close, food insecurity is increasing. As a result, food banks are serving more people, and are in need of donations now more than ever. Last week, a longtime member of our network, Hansen Bros. Moving & Storage, answered the call and donated 1,533 lbs. of boxed rice to Northwest Harvest.

Hansen Bros. Moving & Storage, an Allied Van Lines agent, has been helping us reduce food waste & fight hunger for 8 years. Since joining our network they have delivered more than 40,000 lbs. of food and providing 33,000 meals to people who are facing hunger in the greater Seattle area.

Northwest Harvest has not only seen a dramatic increase in the number of people needing assistance, but also dramatic decrease in large food donations. Grocery stores struggling to meet customer demands are no longer able to make the large food donations they used to. In order to meet the increased demand, Northwest Harvest has increased the flow of food through their partners throughout the state. They are also delivering pre-packed shelf stable food kits to locations in the Seattle metro area. The generous donation from Hansen Bros. Moving & Storage will go directly to help build these pre-packed food kits.

There were more than 848,000 people in Washington who were facing hunger before COVID-19. That number has increased significantly over the past 6 weeks, and we are so thankful that Hansen Bros. Moving & Storage is doing what they can to help their neighbors in need.

The COVID-19 Pandemic has left a massive economic impact and has drastically increased the need for emergency food assistance nationwide. Move For Hunger is actively searching for ways to meet the demand, but we need your help.

If you can, please consider making a donation to Move For Hunger. With your support, we'll be able to rapidly respond and mobilize our network in communities across the United States and Canada.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
