Hampton Roads Moving & Storage Makes Record-Setting Delivery

January 2, 2019

In March, Farm Fresh announced that it planned to close or sell all of its 37 supermarkets in Hampton Roads, Virginia. It's impossible to overstate what kind of impact this had on the region. Hundreds of people lost their jobs, residents no longer had a place to shop, and the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and Eastern Shore saw one of its major suppliers disappear.

Despite all of that uncertainty, food insecure families in the area could at least count on the Mayflower Marathon. Now in its 22nd year, this food drive was held for 57 consecutive hours during the weekend before Thanksgiving. And for the past several years, our partners from Hampton Roads Moving & Storage have volunteered their time and trucks to help provide holiday meals for their neighbors in need.

HamptonRoadsMayflowerMarathonFoodDrive_106.9FoxRadio (1).jpgHampton Roads Moving & Storage had trucks stationed at both the Coliseum Marketplace in Hampton and at the Kroger in Yorktown from November 16-18. And, based on the results, it seems like they didn't have much time to rest over the course of those 3 days! Members of the local community donated nearly 208,000 pounds of turkeys, sweet potatoes, stuffing, and other Thanksgiving staples -- that was enough to fill 6 trailers and will provide 173,000 meals!

"All the things we sometimes take for granted but families are so grateful for during the holiday season," said Ruth Jones Nichols, the CEO of the Food Bank of Southeast Virginia and Eastern Shore.

It was a record-setting year for the Mayflower Marathon and one of the largest deliveries ever by a member of the Move For Hunger network, but it will still only offer a temporary reprieve for the food bank. More than 166,000 people, including 1 in 7 children, still face hunger each and every day.

"Everything we receive from holiday contributions will be gone end of January, beginning of February," said Jones Nichols.

And this isn't a problem which is unique to Virginia. Food banks across the country will all see a steep decline in donations in the weeks and months ahead. That's why we need your support now more than ever!

So please, hold a food drive or make a donation and help us feed 3 million people in 2019!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
