Hall Lane Moving & Storage Raises Nearly $11,000 at First Annual Long Island Truck Pull

October 4, 2018

While fighting hunger usually means collecting food, sometimes it can take the form of a physical group activity. That's why we were so excited for Hall Lane Moving & Storage's first-ever Long Island Truck Pull at the Great South Bay Brewery on September 23. Twenty teams, including the champions, Team Big Country, competed in this event and raised close to $11,000 to support our programs!

HallLaneLongIslandTruckPull2018-(59)-web.jpgNever heard of a truck pull before? It involves teams of 5-10 that are tasked with pulling a moving truck 100 feet. Whichever team crosses the finish lines in the fastest time wins! Keep in mind that these trucks way upwards of 14,000 lbs. This is no easy feat, but it's outrageously fun and for a great cause.

We are so grateful for the support from TranserviceBrian Ahern Agency, and Allstate for sponsoring this event and to Great South Bay Brewery for being so accommodating and helpful throughout it. A special thank you as well to Rachel Alvar and Nancy Jones from Hall Lane Moving Storage for really going above and beyond to make this event a success! Their efforts are much appreciated and the turnout was astounding.

HallLaneLongIslandTruckPull2018-(325)-web.jpgA huge thank you to Hall Lane Moving & Storage for hosting this event and being one of our most valued members! Since joining our network in 2010, they have collected more than 33,000 lbs. of food, providing more than 25,000 meals to families in need! Their dedication to the fight against hunger is truly inspiring! The event raises awareness of food insecurity and makes a big difference for many families who need help. We can not wait to see what next year has in store!

There are nearly 150,000 people who are food insecure on Long Island, including 1 in 8 children. We are fortunate to have incredible partners across the country who help make events like this a reality. Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
