Golden Services Rescues 17,000 lbs. of Food from Rock 'n' Roll Seattle Marathon

June 28, 2018

Every year there are thousands of marathons across the country where determined runners try their best to accomplish the impressive athletic feat. For these marathons, tons of food and water are available at the finish line to help replenish runners who have pushed their bodies to its limit. What most people don't know, however, is that whatever food is left over after the race is often just thrown out. That's where we can help.

Since 2014, Move For Hunger has worked tirelessly to rescue leftover food/beverages from races all across the country. In fact, our network has volunteered to rescue all of the bananas, energy bars, water, and sports drinks from 14 races this year alone. Thanks to those movers, more than 117,000 pounds of food and drinks have been delivered to food banks nationwide.

Our most recent rescue took place in Seattle on June 10 at the Rock n' Roll Marathon, Half Marathon, and 5K. Our friends from Golden Services picked up 17,500 lbs. of food/drinks and delivered it all to the Rainier Valley Food Bank, where they will be properly distributed. Over the past 3 years, members of our network have recovered 61,500 lbs. of food from this race alone.

The team at Golden Services is doing an amazing job, but there are still more than 41 million Americans who struggle with food insecurity on a daily basis, so we need even more help!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
