Golden Services Donates Thousands of LBS. of Food, Drinks, and Winter Clothing to Tacoma Rescue Mission

December 18, 2017

More than 10,000 people compete in the Seattle Marathon every year and after running (or walking) 26.2 miles, they are exhausted, thirsty, and hungry. When the athletes cross the finish line, they are typically directed toward a tent where they can refuel with fruit, snacks, water, and sports drinks. The race organizers make sure they have more than enough for everyone, which might typically lead to a lot of perfectly good food being thrown in the trash. For the third year in a row, however, Golden Services, LLC of Lakewood volunteered to rescue anything that was left behind.

SeattleMarathon2017_RacePickup_GoldenServices (2).JPGThis year, Golden Services also decided to hold a food drive at their office leading up to the race on November 26. Employees, clients, and members of the local community were encouraged to bring donations of non-perishable food items, such as rice, pasta, peanut butter, canned tuna, canned soup, and canned fruits/vegetables, to help provide meals to their neighbors in need. Their combined efforts resulted in more than 1,500 pounds of food being delivered to the Tacoma Rescue Mission.

But that's not all! The Seattle Marathon also asked runners to leave any warm clothing they’d like to donate at the starting line. Nearly 5,000 lbs. of jackets, sweatshirts, and more were collected and delivered to the Rescue Mission by Golden Services just in time for the winter months.

More than 915,000 people, including 1 in 5 children, in Washington are food insecure. Thank you to Vikki and the rest of the team at Golden Services of Lakewood for volunteering to spread some cheer during the holiday season.

Make it your New Year’s resolution to hold a food drive in 2018.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
