Girls on the Run of Delaware and Hopkins & Sons Team Up for Another Food Drive

December 1, 2017

Girls on The Run are on a mission. The non-profit organization is dedicated to empowering young women to chase their dreams and uncover their full potential. Girls on the Run uses running to inspire and motivate girls, encourage lifelong health and fitness, and build confidence through accomplishment. And, for the second time this year, they have collaborated with Move for Hunger to fight hunger along the way.

Girls on The Run held a food drive in conjunction with their 5k race on Saturday, November 18 at the Wilmington, DE Waterfront. This statewide event encouraged teams, coaches, children, runners, walkers and members of the community to come out and donate non-perishable foods. Nearly 160 pounds of food was collected, enough to provide 130 meals. All of the donations were picked up and delivered to the Food Bank of Delaware by Hopkins and Sons, an Atlas Van Lines agent.

Girls on the Run has held four food drives over the past two years, and they have collected nearly 4,100 pounds of food combined, which is enough to provide more than 3,400 meals for their neighbors in need.

This was a great way to keep the shelves at the food bank stocked before Thanksgiving. Thank you to Girls on The Run and Hopkins & Sons for your commitment to fighting hunger in Delaware.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
