Gentle Giant Moving Makes Weekly Delivery to Local Food Pantry

June 18, 2020

Our partners from Gentle Giant Moving Company in Somerville, MA have been making weekly deliveries to support a local food pantry during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Every Tuesday, Gentle Giant sends a truck to the Greater Boston Food Bank to pick up donations and then delivers them to the Bread of Life Food Pantry in Malden, MA. Since May 12, Gentle Giant has transported more than 190,000 lbs. of food to the pantry, which is the equivalent of 159,000 meals.

GentleGiantMovingCompany_Logo-500x241.pngThe help has been desperately needed. According to new projections by Feeding America, 1 in 8 people in Eastern Massachusetts will experience food insecurity this year due to the pandemic, which is a 59% increase. The Greater Boston Food Bank reports that they have seen a 50% increase in the demand for food assistance, and that they have distributed more food over the last 3 months than at any other time in their 40-year history.

Gentle Giant Moving Company has been committed to helping us reduce food waste and fight hunger for years. Since 2015, their 19 participating branches have delivered more than 300,000 lbs. of food to food banks all across the United States. We are so grateful to Larry O'Toole and every member of the Gentle Giant crew for their continued support, especially during this unprecedented crisis.

The COVID-19 Pandemic has left a massive economic impact and has drastically increased the need for emergency food assistance nationwide. Move For Hunger is actively searching for ways to meet the demand, but we're going to need your help.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
