Gentle Giant Moving Company Fills a Truck to Fight Hunger in Boston

November 27, 2018

We are endlessly inspired by all of the generous people in our network who are out making a difference. One of those groups of people is Gentle Giant Moving Company. From rescuing food/drinks at the New York City Triathlon to gleaning fresh produce at a farm outside of Philadelphia, Gentle Giant has been doing great things for people in the communities they serve. On November 10, their corporate office Newton, MA location jumped into the fight against hunger by hosting a Fill-A-Truck food drive!

Curious how Fill-A-Truck food drives work? It's all in the name! A moving truck is set up in the parking lot of a local grocery store and the community is challenged to donate enough non-perishable items to fill the entire trailer. We love seeing our movers get involved this way because not only are Fill-A-Truck events easy for them to organize, but they are also a lot of fun! This time around, Gentle Giant parked in front of Star Market in Auburndale.

By the end of that chilly Saturday morning, Gentle Giant collected 352 pounds of food! All of the donations -- which will be enough to provide 293 meals for their neighbors in need -- were delivered to The Greater Boston Food Bank . With more than 460,000 people in the greater Boston area who are food insecure, including 1 in 10 children, the efforts of Gentle Giant will surely make a difference in many lives.

Thank you to Gentle Giant  for taking the time to make a difference in your community! We are honored to have you on our side!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
