The Gallery Residential Brokerage Collects 450 LBS. of Food

February 6, 2018

The Gallery Residential Brokerage hosted its first-ever fall food drive from November 1-December 1 at their offices in Asbury Park and Wall, NJ. Donations were accepted at both locations, as well as at open houses throughout the month of November.

The Brokerage encouraged their staff, clients, and members of the local community to donate non-perishable, holiday-themed foods, such as stuffing, instant potatoes, cranberry sauce, gravy, canned vegetables, and pie filling. A grand total of 450 lbs. of food was collected from both offices and the open houses, which is the equivalent of 375 meals!

Our friends from Classic Moving and Storage and Lowy's Moving Service, a Wheaton World Wide Moving agent, were gracious enough to provide collection boxes to the Wall and Asbury Park offices, respectively. All of the donations were delivered to Fulfill, a food bank that supports more than 300 food pantries and soup kitchens in Monmouth and Ocean Counties.

Nearly 1 million people, including 1 in 7 children, in New Jersey face hunger every day. In Monmouth County alone, 1 in 10 families is affected by food insecurity and may rely on a food pantry to help make ends meet. Thank you to The Gallery Residential Brokerage, Lowy's Moving Service, Classic Moving Service, and all those who participated in the food drive for taking action and making a difference!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
