From a Food Festival to the Food Bank: Crown Relocations Rescues Nearly 1,000 LBS. of Food

June 19, 2018

Crown Relocations of New York is always ready and willing to help us reduce food waste and fight hunger.

On June 10, Fairway Market hosted their first-ever Food Festival at the Armory Track in upper Manhattan. More than 80 vendors attended the event, which was a bit different than your typical food festival, as large companies like Kellogg’s, Frito-Lay, Clif Bar, and many others all had booths. With a majority of vendors supplying packaged food, this festival was a perfect opportunity for a food rescue to ensure that any leftovers did not go to waste. Our friends from Crown Relocations volunteered their time and resources to rescue nearly 1,000 lbs. of food, which will provide about 825 meals for their neighbors in need.

This food rescue was just a small pickup compared to what Crown Relocations of New York has done since becoming one of the first companies to join Move For Hunger way back in 2010. Through food drives, rescues, and other events, Crown Relocations of New York has worked tirelessly to collect almost 200,000 pounds of food, which has supplied 165,000 meals to those that need it most. Their dedication to the fight against hunger is truly inspiring!

And Crown Relocations isn’t stopping there! On August 4, they will be hosting their First Annual Truck Pull. Teams of five to ten people will pull a moving truck 100 feet, competing to see who can do it the fastest. This truck pull is a unique and exciting way to get involved and raise money to support Move For Hunger.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
