February 2020 Community of the Month: The Lafayette at Valley Forge

March 4, 2020

Move For Hunger is proud to announce that The Lafayette at Valley Forge, a Westover Companies property, has been named our Community of the Month, presented by Kastle, for February 2020!

As a member of our Multi-Family Apartment Community Program, The Lafayette at Valley Forge is helping to reduce food waste and fight hunger in Pennsylvania. When a resident gives notice that they will be moving out, the The Lafayette at Valley Forge's staff provides them with a program letter and a food collection bag. The residents are encouraged to donate any non-perishable food items that they will not be taking with them to their new homes. It's a simple, sustainable way to make a difference.

More than 683,000 people in the greater Philadelphia area face hunger, including 1 in 7 children. Meanwhile, we are wasting 40% of the food in the United States every single year. While Move For Hunger can't solve these problems on its own, we do believe we can eliminate food waste from the relocation process. And why is that important? Because 32 million Americans move each year, if we rescued 1 pound of food from each of them, we could be providing 29 million meals to families facing hunger!

Last month, The Lafayette at Valley Forge proved that every apartment community has the potential to make a difference! Their residents donated 602 lbs. of food in February, which will provide 500 meals for their neighbors in need!

Congratulations to The Lafayette at Valley Forge on this much-deserved recognition! Thank you for helping us reduce food waste and fight hunger in the Keystone State!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
