February 2019 Mover of the Month: Northlake Moving & Storage

March 22, 2019

Each month, we highlight one of the moving companies in our network for their extraordinary commitment to fighting hunger in their community. We are excited to announce that Northlake Moving & Storage, an Atlas Van Lines agent, has been named our Mover of the Month for February 2019!

Northlake Moving & Storage is based in Covington, LA, which is about an hour drive from New Orleans. So, naturally, our events team contacted the crew to see if they'd like to host a Mardi Gras food drive this year. We weren't surprised when Northlake Moving agreed to collect red beans, rice, and other non-perishable items to help their neighbors in need. We weren't expecting, however, to learn that the team had delivered nearly 200,000 lbs. of food, water, and supplies to hurricane victims over the past 2 years!

In September of 2017, Northlake Moving & Storage partnered with the First Baptist Church of Covington to collect relief items and delivered 150,000 lbs. of supplies to the victims of Hurricane Harvey in Beaumont, TX. In October of 2018, the crew delivered 12 pallets of food and other essentials to areas in North Carolina that were ravaged by Hurricane Florence. And, one month later, they delivered 23,000 lbs. of supplies to help victims of Hurricane Michael in Panama City, FL.

That we are only just finding out about these amazing efforts should tell you everything you need to know about the character of Larry Terrell and his team. They didn't do it for the recognition. They weren't expecting any applause. They simply recognized that people were in need, and they knew that they had to do something to help. That's the culture we're trying to create throughout the relocation industry and that's why Northlake Moving & Storage is (somewhat belatedly) receiving this award.

In addition to the award, Northlake Moving & Storage will also be receiving Move For Hunger truck decals for their entire fleet. Congratulations to Northlake Moving & Storage on this much-deserved recognition!

Thank you for helping us reduce fight hunger in Louisiana, Texas, North Carolina, and Florida!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
