El Paso Church Collects Nearly 1,200 LBS. of Food in Just 1 Day!

May 17, 2018

Sometimes all you need for a successful food drive is a few tables, some boxes, and a community that is committed to helping their neighbors in need. MissioDeiChurchFoodDrive2018-(3)web.jpg

On May 5, Missio Dei Church in El Paso, Texas held a food drive in the church's parking lot from 7:00 AM-7:00 PM. We provided flyers and our partners from The Inland Sea, an Atlas Van Lines agent, dropped off collection boxes, but most of the credit for this event goes to the organizers and their generous congregation. Nearly 1,200 lbs. of food was collected, which is enough to provide 1,000 meals. That's an incredible total for a 1-day event!

The crew from The Inland Sea also volunteered to pick up and deliver all of the donations to the El Pasoans Fighting Hunger Food Bank, which is the distribution center for more than 120 partner pantries, churches, soup kitchens, and shelters in the region.

More than 71,000 people, including 1 in 5 children, in the greater El Paso area face hunger each day. Thank you to Missio Dei Church, The Inland Sea, and to everyone who made a donation for coming together to fight hunger in your community!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
