DMS Moving Systems is Going the Distance in Detroit

October 1, 2014

DMS Moving Systems, an Atlas Van Lines agent has been a partner with Move For Hunger for over two years.  This fall they wanted to do a fun event that could raise monetary and food donations, while also spreading the word about Move For Hunger’s mission. The Detroit Free Press Tamer Bank Marathon was the perfect way to do that! One of the biggest races in Michigan, this unique race has an international portion for the half-marathon and marathon. Runners race over the Ambassador Bridge into Windsor, Canada and back into the U.S. through the tunnel. DMS will be taking Move For Hunger international for this event!

HOW ARE THEY FUNDRAISING?

DMS  wanted to make the fundraiser fun for everyone! With company support,  DMS made sure everyone could get involved, running or not. Employees not participating in the Detroit Marathon could “buy” an extra day off by donating to Move For Hunger or donating non-perishable items. By doing both a food drive and a fundraising campaign, they’re really going the distance for Move For Hunger. DMS is moving towards their goal, just check out their progress!

WHO’S RUNNING?

The DMS team is no doubt is excited for the event. Nick Morse, Debby Miodek, Sarah Cyrek and Brittney Shaffer will be participating in the Fitness 5k. For some, this is their first race and they are looking forward to representing Move For Hunger. Rob Cyrek and Alexandra Meyer will be doing the International Half Marathon; both experienced racers.  Thanks to team leader Alexandra, DMS is leading the way to bring Move For Hunger to Detroit and our Canadian neighbors in Windsor!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
