Dircks Moving & Logistics Returns To The Tempe Triathlon & Rescues 5,000+ LBS. of Food!

September 27, 2018

Team Move For Hunger is a national network of runners and walkers who dedicate their performance in road races to the 41 million Americans who are struggling with food insecurity. From 5Ks to ultramarathons, each race Team Move For Hunger participates in provides us with the resources we need to continue the fight against hunger. Though the work of the team is incredible, we noticed a roadblock at the finish line of these races: thousands of pounds of perfectly good food and drinks were going to waste.

The best thing to do after a race is to rehydrate and refuel. Runners and walkers are almost always provided energy bars, bananas, sports drinks, and water to recover, however, the organizers typically order far more than they could ever possibly distribute. The leftovers are thrown in the trash, leaving thousands of pounds of food uneaten. That's why we were so glad to hear that Dircks Moving & Logistics wanted to save food at the Tempe Triathlon earlier this month.

After a successful food rescue of more than 4,100 pounds at the 2017 Triathlon, Dircks Moving and Logistics hit the ground running this year and saved more than 5,500 pounds of food/beverages! All of the donations were delivered to St. Mary's Food Bank Alliance and distributed to the community. With more than 600,000 people facing hunger people in Maricopa County, including 1 in 5 children, the dedication of Dircks Moving and Logistics is greatly appreciated.

2018 has been a successful year for Move For Hunger's food rescue efforts. In fact, after 17 races this year, more than 140,000 pounds of food and drinks have been saved from events all across the U.S.! Thanks so much to Dircks Moving and Logistics for making a difference for the second year in a row!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
