Dermer Dreams Collects 24,000 LBS. of Food for Thanksgiving

January 6, 2020

We partnered with Dermer Dreams to hold a Thanksgiving Food Drive to help provide holiday meals for people facing hunger in New Jersey.

Food collection bags were distributed to 2,150 residents in Fair Haven, NJ and, on November 23, the Dermer Dreams team set out to collect the donatioms. Thanks to the generosity of the community, more than 24,600 lbs. of food was collected, providing more than 20,000 meals to their neighbors in need. Our partners from Lowy’s Moving Service, a Wheaton World Wide Moving agent, provided a truck for the event and delivered all of the donations to Lunch Break.

Daniel Dermer has worked as a property manager in New York City for many years, and after observing the struggles that people experiencing homelessness face, Dermer knew he had to take action. The goal of Dermer Dreams is to provide a way for those who wish to help with a very easy way to do so, and has developed food drive programs at every property his company has managed. For his Thanksgiving Food Drive, Dermer enlisted the aid of Move For Hunger, and we were more than happy to assist in any way we could.

“When I first called Move For Hunger and they told me that they would provide a truck for our food drive at no cost, I thought this was too good to be true,” Dermer said. "Not only was it true, but we received outstanding service from start to finish. Move For Hunger was an integral part of the success of the Dermer Dreams food drive. We look forward to working together again.”

There are nearly 866,000 people in New Jersey who are food insecure, including 1 in 7 children. We are so thankful for the effort of Daniel Dermer, Dermer Dreams, Lowy's Moving, and the residents of Fair Haven for helping us to fight hunger in our home state!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
