December 2019 Mover of the Month: Hansen Bros. Moving & Storage

January 7, 2020

Each month, we highlight one of the moving companies in our network for their extraordinary commitment to fighting hunger in their community. We are excited to announce that Hansen Bros. Moving & Storage, an Allied Van Lines agent, has been named our Mover of the Month for December 2019!

Hansen Bros. Moving & Storage certainly finished 2019 on a high note! The Seattle, WA movers assisted with 5 food drives in December and delivered nearly 5,600 lbs. of food to their local food banks just in time for the holidays. That was enough to provide more than 4,600 meals to their neighbors in need.

Four of the food drives were held a Security Properties Residential apartment communities in Seattle. All four properties are members of our new Multi-Family Program and held the food drive to supplement the donations they are collecting from their residents throughout the year. Each apartment community encouraged residents to donate items that would help families in the city enjoy a holiday meal. Hansen Bros. made it all possible by volunteering to pick up the donations from each building and delivering them to Northwest Harvest.

Transportation is one of the biggest challenges that food banks like Northwest Harvest face. They don't always have enough trucks, drivers, or time to pick up food from everyone who wants to donate. It's especially difficult during the holiday season, when people are feeling especially generous.

Such was the case last month, when Whittier Elementary School held a food drive to support Northwest Harvest. Gary Newte, the food bank's Procurement Manager, contacted Move For Hunger to see if we had a moving company in the area who could pick up the donations from the school and deliver it to their distribution facility. Hansen Bros. was more than happy to help, a perfect example of how members of the Move For Hunger network can provide logistical solutions to close the hunger gap in the communities they serve.

"As a local, family owned and operated company since 1890, Hansen Bros. has a deep appreciation for our community," said Larry Nelsen, Hansen Bros. Moving & Storage's Owner & President.

Seattle is one of the most expensive places to live in the entire United States. Home prices have increased by about 50% since 2014, and the average cost to rent is the highest of any major city outside of California. Nelsen said that Hansen Bros. recognizes how those factors make it more difficult for some people in their community to afford basic necessities, like food.

"In stark contrast to the exponential growth and prosperity in the Greater Seattle region, many long-time residents are being pushed out in the face of rising housing and living costs and the benefits of the growth in our regional economy have not been evenly distributed."

With the city facing a homelessness crisis, Nelsen said that Hansen Bros. was committed to doing whatever they could to help.

"While we have always supported a multitude of local charitable organizations with the goals of assisting those in need and enhancing the quality of life within our community overall, Hansen Bros. believes it’s more important than ever before to give back to our community given the growing homelessness and food insecurity challenges being faced in our own backyard."

Since joining Move For Hunger way back in January of 2012, Hansen Bros. Moving & Storage has delivered more than 38,500 lbs. of food to their local food banks -- that's the equivalent of 32,000 meals.

In addition to the award, Hansen Bros. Moving & Storage will also be receiving Move For Hunger truck decals for their entire fleet.

Congratulations to Hansen Bros. Moving & Storage on this much-deserved recognition! Thank you for helping us reduce food waste and fight hunger in the Evergreen State!
