Darby Development Holds Fundraiser to Support Move For Hunger

June 18, 2019

In May, our friends at Darby Development Company held a fundraiser at 10 properties in South Carolina. Any resident who made a $10 donation to Move For Hunger was entered into a raffle for a chance to win a 50" HD-TV!

Twenty-five residents entered the contest and donated a grand total of $760! Erin Thompson was the lucky winner of the brand new television. All of the donations will go to support our hunger relief and food waste reduction programs.

“The Team Members and Customers of Darby Development are enjoying our partnership with Move For Hunger," said Darby's Vice President, Victoria Cowart. "What they do is a mission match for our industry -- an easy fit, an easy lift, and they’re just great to work with! It’s a winning partnership for us, and we look forward to many years of great community support efforts.”

Darby Development Company is a member of our Multi-Family Apartment Program. When residents at the participating properties move out, they are given the opportunity to donate any non-perishable food they don't want to take with them. One of our local transportation partners volunteers to pick up all of the donations and delivers them to the food bank.

Nearly 680,000 people, including 1 in 6 children, in South Carolina are food insecure. Thank you so much to Darby Development Company and their residents for this amazing contribution to the community and for their commitment to our cause.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
