Crown Relocations Rescues 3,600 LBS. of Fresh Produce, Snacks & Water from the Houston Half Marathon

November 14, 2017

HoustonHalfMarathon_FoodPickUp2017 (1).jpgOur network has rescued more food and beverages from road races this year than we ever have before. Crown Relocations of Houston has played a huge role in making this record-setting year possible. In April, they recovered more than 13,000 lbs. from the Ironman Triathlon and on October 29 they volunteered to rescue any unused food and beverages from the Houston Half Marathon.

After a grueling 13.1-mile race, runners need to refuel. There was plenty of food and drinks waiting for the athletes when they cross the finish line, more than the competitors could possibly consume. So what happens to everything that the runners don't take?

Thanks to Crown Relocations, more than 3,600 lbs. of bottled water, fresh oranges, and other snacks were recovered from the race. Everything was delivered to the Houston Food Bank, which services an area where more than 1.1 million people are food insecure, and has been facing an even greater demand in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey.

More than 42 million Americans are facing hunger each day, yet 40% of the food produced in the United States each year is lost or wasted. Thank you to our friends at Crown Relocations of Houston for your commitment to reducing food waste and fighting hunger!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
