Coleman Worldwide Moving Rescues 3,000 LBS. of Food/Beverages from San Diego Triathlon

October 17, 2017

There's no time to rest during a triathlon. Most of us would get tired just thinking about swimming for .46 miles, following that with a 12-mile bike ride, and finishing your workout with a 3.08-mile run.

The athletes who compete in these endurance events use every ounce of energy they have to make it across the finish line, and that's why race organizers always make sure to have plenty of food of beverages waiting for them. No matter how exhausted the competitors may be, however, there is ALWAYS plenty of snacks, water, and sports drinks that get left behind. And too often, what's left over simply gets thrown away. Over the past four years, we have made it a priority to rescue as much of this perfectly good food as we possibly can.

On October 15, Coleman Worldwide Moving became the latest member of our network to join our rescue efforts when they recovered more than 3,000 pounds of food and beverages from the Lifetime Tri San Diego Triathlon. Coleman delivered all of the donations to Feeding San Diego, which serves more than 63,000 children, families, and seniors every week.

In 2017 alone, Move For Hunger has rescued nearly 155,000 pounds of non-perishables from races all across the country. That's the most our network has ever recovered during a calendar year.

Thank you to the team at Coleman Worldwide Moving for being part of the solution. Learn more about food waste and how you can help.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
