Cartus Collects 6,000 LBS. of Food and "CANS Their CEO"

May 30, 2017

Have you ever dreamed of messing with your boss? Well, employees at Cartus in Danbury, Connecticut executed this dream, and for a great cause, no less. The Cartus team took on the challenge of Canning the CEO by completely filling President and CEO Kevin Kelleher's office with boxes and cans of food to be donated to children and families in the greater Danbury area.

While many people spend their summers bronzing at the beach and filling up at barbecues, tons of parents in Danbury are left feeling hopeless and burdened by the thought of providing food for their children during the summer months. The Cartus team decided to take action and support their local food pantry by hosting the food drive during the first 3 weeks of May.

Meyer, for this campaign. The event kicked off with a “touch a truck” event on April 27 where William B. Meyer of Stratford parked a moving truck outside the headquarters to receive food donations.

While the corporation had an initial goal of collecting 2,000 pounds of food, together they were able to exceed this number. The team finished with a total of 6,080 pounds of non-perishable food items, which translates into more than 5,000 meals.

More than 450,000 people, including 1 in 6 children, battle hunger each day in Connecticut. Because of the efforts of everyone involved, 400-500 families in the western Connecticut area will be fed this summer. All of the food items will be donated to the Western Connecticut, which provides social services and programs to low-income individuals in the community.

“Working with Move for Hunger is a wonderful way for us to be a conduit and get food delivered to people who truly need it," William B. Meyer's Vice President of Sales, Bob Gallucci, told Hamlet Hub.  "Since Cartus shares our commitment to people, it was a pleasure to work with them on this particular donation.”

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
