Brookfield Residential Employees Come Together For Hunger Action Month

October 4, 2018

If you've been following Move For Hunger recently, you probably have heard a lot of chatter about something called Hunger Action Month. This nationwide call to take takes place every September, and it's the perfect time to get involved in your community and make a difference. That's why we were so excited to hear that Brookfield Residential of Northern California wanted to host a food drive and fundraiser to raise awareness!

Starting on September 4, employees at the Brookfield Residential office in Danville were encouraged to donate non-perishable food items, including tuna, pasta, peanut butter, canned vegetables, and more. In addition to the food donations, the employees were also given the option to purchase Hunger Action Month cutouts as part of the fundraiser. The proceeds go to support Move For Hunger, and then the contributor writes their name on the cutout to hang it up in the office. The cutouts were placed on display just in time for Brookfield Residential's Homeowner Meet & Greet Event, which also happened to fall on the final day of the food drive.

By September 22, Brookfield Residential had collected 240 pounds of food. That's enough to provide nearly 200 meals for California families in need! Anderson Bros. Movers volunteered their time to pick up and transport all the donations to the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano. Brookfield Residential also raised $500 through purchases of the Hunger Action Month cutouts.

With more than 580,000 people in Northern California who are food insecure, including 1 in 6 children, the recognition of Hunger Action Month is so important. Thank you so much to Brookfield Residential and Anderson Bros. Movers for not only dedicating their September to their community but also for joining us in the fight against hunger.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
