Broken Arrow Public Schools Hold 6th Annual Food Drive

April 17, 2018

Broken Arrow (OK) Public Schools held their sixth annual district-wide food drive from March 26 to March 30. Anyone in the community, including students, parents, and faculty members, were encouraged to donate non-perishable items to help provide meals to their neighbors in need.

Broken Arrow Public Schools has always been determined to collect a monumental amount of food, and they succeeded again this year. More than 6,800 lbs. of food was donated, which is enough to provide nearly 5,700 meals! Our friends from Accent Moving & Storage provided boxes for the event and volunteered to deliver all of the donations to Broken Arrow Neighbors. Since 2013, the Broken Arrow Schools have collected more than 80,000 lbs. of food.

Although they collected enough food to provide nearly 5,700 meals, Candy Lievsay, a teacher at Sequoyah Middle School, said she was disappointed in the results.  BrokenArrowFoodDrive2018 (3).JPG

“This was a very difficult year to try to do a food drive," said Lievsay, who helped start this annual tradition after reading about Move For Hunger. "I am grateful for every pound we get this year."

We are always amazed by the generosity of the Broken Arrow community, and this year was no different.

"The students and teachers at Broken Arrow Public Schools continue to inspire me," said our Executive Director Adam Lowy. "Over the past six years, they have donated nearly 80,000 pounds of food to Broken Arrow Neighbors. More importantly, an entire generation of children has learned about the importance of giving back to their community. We are so proud to be a part of this event."

Nearly 100,000 people in Tulsa County are food insecure, including 1 in 5 children. Thank you to Candy, her students, her fellow teachers, and to the crew at Accent Moving & Storage. We are so grateful for the opportunity to work with such wonderful community every year.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
