Brandon Moving & Storage Kicks Off September with a Pair of Fill-A-Truck Food Drives

September 14, 2018

September is Hunger Action Month and we knew that it would only be a matter of time before our friends at Brandon Moving & Storage, a Bekins agent, would jump in to make a difference. And on September 8-9, they did just that by holding two Fill-a-Truck food drives - their 7th and 8th food drives of the year!

Brandon Moving & Storage is no stranger to Fill-A-Truck food drives, but you might be. So what are they, exactly?

BrandonWalmartFoodDrive2018September (1).jpegHere's the idea: we park a moving truck is set up outside a local grocery store, and challenge shoppers to donate enough non-perishable food to fill the entire trailer! These food drives are an easy way to collect THOUSANDS of pounds of food in just a few hours, which is why they are so exciting!

Brandon Moving & Storage's first food drive took place on September 8 at Walmart Super Center in Clinton, AR and collected an incredible 3,100 pounds of food for the Choctaw Food Bank. The very next day, another 1,840 pounds were collected at 10 Box Cost Plus in Conway. Those donation were delivered to the Community Action Program for Central Arkansas (CAPCA). Combined, Brandon Moving & Storage spent the weekend collecting enough food to provide more than 4,000 meals! What a great way to kick off Hunger Action Month!

More than 500,000 people in Arkansas struggle with food insecurity, including 1 in 4 children. The statistic is scary, but what's incredible is that Brandon Moving & Storage has collected more than 15,300 pounds of food for Arkansas residents this year ALONE. Their continuous hard work and dedication is most appreciated, and we are so honored to fight hunger alongside them.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
