Brandon Moving & Storage Fills Truck with 1,760 LBS. of Food!

April 16, 2018

Don Henson and our friends from Brandon Moving & Storage, a Bekins Van Lines agent, hosted yet another impressive food drive! The Fill-A-Truck event was a held at the Walmart Super Center in Clinton, Arkansas on April 7 from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. All of the donations were delivered to the Choctaw Food Bank.

Although they experienced some inclement weather conditions (snow? in April? in Arkansas?!), the Brandon crew was still able to collect 1,760 lbs. of food -- which is enough to provide 1,450 meals to their neighbors in need! While this is an amazing accomplishment, Don still hoped they could have collected more donations. Claude and Karin Ruiz from the Choctaw Food Bank accurately reassured Don by writing in an email, "You all are AWESOME!"

Brandon Moving & Storage has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that they are committed to ending hunger in Arkansas. Every time one food drive ends, they start planning another one! It was only a month ago, after all, that they helped students at a local elementary school collect more than 1,500 lbs. of food.

Although Brandon Moving & Storage has already delivered 3,200+ lbs. of non-perishables to local food banks this year, they are just getting started. Don and his crew already have 4 MORE food drives planned for 2018. We are proud to work alongside such a dedicated moving company!

Nearly 3,000 people in Van Buren County are food insecure, including 1 in 4 children. Thank you Don, Kyle, and the entire Brandon Moving & Storage team for recognizing the urgency of the problem and taking action!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
