Willows at Fort Mill awarded Community of the Month with Spread the Love Food Drive

April 12, 2022

Each month, Move For Hunger chooses one community that has displayed a huge dedication to ending hunger. For March, Willows at Fort Mill was chosen to be Community of the Month!

Located in Fort Mill, South Carolina, a quaint suburban town alongside the North Carolina border, the Bell Partners property collected 112 lbs of donations from their Spread the Love Food Drive. The donations were transported by Armstrong Relocation - Charlotte to Loaves and Fishes of Charlotte.

“We think it is important to be part of our community and give back where we can. Move For Hunger allows both our associates and our residents to easily participate in a worthy cause,” said Cindy Clare, COO of Bell Partners. “It is always important to give back, but the pandemic has shined an even larger spotlight on hunger in the U.S.”

This was Willows at Fort Mill’s first food drive through Move For Hunger, and we’re excited to see how much bigger their impact will be in 2022! Bell Partners has been an invaluable partner since 2019, and we’re beyond thankful for each and every one of their properties that has joined the fight against hunger!

“Being able to support Move For Hunger means that we can make a difference in our communities. We are so proud of our teams and their participation in Move For Hunger and we are thrilled that Willows at Fort Mill is being recognized for all of their hard work and success,” Clare continued.

In South Carolina, over 550,000 people face hunger, with 1 in 7 children not knowing where their next meal will come from - which means every donation is much needed!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
