Wheaton World Wide Moving Transports Over 330,000 LBs in 2020

January 8, 2021

Since the very beginning, Wheaton Van Lines has also been a strong partner of ours in the fight against hunger. Move For Hunger got started with one moving company - Lowy’s Moving Service, the family business of our Executive Director and Founder, Adam Lowy.  The company dates back over 100 years and is part of Wheaton World Wide Moving. So when we say, they have been with us from the beginning, we really mean the very first move.

Since then, year in and year out, Wheaton continues to make an impact and 2020 was no exception. Combining about 30 different agents under the Wheaton banner, they transported 338,000 lbs of food this year which is over 280,000 meals. All-Time, they have delivered over 3.5 million lbs of food.

Because their companies are spread all across the United States, Move For Hunger and Wheaton can deliver food to the local food banks in the same area that they were collected. This year is even more important as the number of food-insecure people in this country is expected to increase by almost 50% and surpass 50 million people in total.

"From the outset, we’ve believed in the Move For Hunger mission, “ said Mark Kirschner, Chief Executive Officer of Wheaton World Wide.  “As the Wheaton family has grown to include not just Wheaton World Wide Moving but also Bekins Van Lines, Stevens Worldwide Van Lines, and Arpin Van Lines, we’re encouraged that our network of participating agents wanting to make a difference in their communities has grown as well so we can significantly impact the problem of hunger."

If the past is any indication, Wheaton will continue to play a pivotal role in Move For Hunger and the fight to end hunger.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
