Volunteer Spotlight: Brittany Lynn, Move For Hunger’s Volunteer of the Quarter

January 30, 2025

At Move For Hunger, our volunteers are the heartbeat of our mission—dedicated individuals who go above and beyond to fight food insecurity in their communities. This quarter, we’re excited to highlight Brittany Lynn, a passionate and committed volunteer whose efforts continue to make a lasting impact.

Meet Brittany

Brittany grew up in Manalapan, New Jersey, and now calls Bradley Beach home. A graduate of the University of Delaware with a degree in Spanish Studies, Brittany’s love for language and culture took her around the world—from studying abroad in Argentina to teaching English in Spain. Now, she’s back stateside, dedicating her time to making a difference through volunteering.

A Passion for Giving Back

Brittany’s commitment to service started early. In college, she founded an Alternative Breaks program, encouraging students to spend their time off learning about social issues and giving back to communities in need. That passion for service never faded. After participating in various volunteer projects post-college, she sought something more consistent—leading her to Move For Hunger.

Finding Move For Hunger

Brittany first discovered Move For Hunger through Volunteermatch.org, a volunteer-engagement platform which connects locals with opportunities to give back. Drawn to the mission of reducing food waste and delivering surplus food to those who need it most, she knew it was the perfect fit. Since joining, she has become an integral part of the volunteer community.

Favorite Volunteer Activities

"I love any volunteer activity where I get to connect with others," Lynn shares. "I enjoy sharing stories and working alongside fellow volunteers.

Memorable Moments

For Brittany, it’s not just about one standout moment—it’s the collection of experiences over the past two years that make volunteering with Move For Hunger so special. "I’m not sure that I can pinpoint an exact moment, it’s really all of the moments I have had over the past 2 years volunteering with Move for Hunger. I have really enjoyed connecting with the staff and consider them to be friends. I always show up happy and leave even happier. I look forward to it every week."

Lessons Learned

What’s one of the biggest takeaways from Brittany’s volunteer journey? "I learned that anything counts! No small task goes unnoticed."

What Keeps Her Going

In a world filled with overwhelming challenges, Brittany finds motivation in the impact she can make locally. "In today's world there are a lot of troubles and issues that seem almost too big to tackle. I try to make as much of a difference as I can in my local community, which is why I make volunteering a part of my every week."

Why Move For Hunger?

Brittany’s values align perfectly with our mission. "Move For Hunger helps supply surplus food to local communities. There is so much food that goes wasted that could be given back to those who need it. I believe this is an important issue that often gets overlooked and am happy to contribute my time to such a positive organization."

Advice for New Volunteers

"Just do it! You can volunteer as much or as little as your schedule allows, but every little bit helps."

The Power of Volunteering

Brittany believes that volunteering strengthens communities in profound ways. "Volunteering helps connect different members of the community that may not have met otherwise. It helps build a network of people and with more people coming together, more change is made!"

Volunteer Gratitude

We are incredibly grateful for Brittany’s dedication and enthusiasm. Volunteers like her are the backbone of Move For Hunger, and her commitment to fighting food insecurity inspires us all. Thank you, Brittany, for everything you do!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
