Truckin' Towards Change: Mazza Recycling's 2nd Annual Truck Pull to Knock Out Hunger

August 10, 2023

Mazza Recycling and Move For Hunger joined forces to throw the ultimate truck-tugging extravaganza on August 5, 2023. This annual event was all about flexing those muscles for a good cause – tackling hunger's heavy impact in New Jersey communities.

The family-friendly event was held at the Mazza Recycling Center in Tinton Falls where the public could partake in a day full of delicious food, fun rides, awesome vendors, a jammin’ DJ, and the opportunity to pull a moving truck in the fastest time at Mazza's facility.

Picture this: teams of about 10 folks channeled their inner strongman (or strongwoman) as they pulled a rope attached to a moving truck, hauling it 100 feet across the finish line. 11 teams participated, however there could only be one winner: Voyager Trucking Corporation! The others that placed included Waste Management and the Mazza Vikings!

Hats off to Mazza's champs, and a big shout out to Mazza for hosting us. The day was an absolute blast – tons of laughter, rides, and just good ol' fun!
- Adam Lowy, Executive Director and Founder of Move For Hunger

“Hats off to Mazza's champs, and a big shout out to Mazza for hosting us. The day was an absolute blast – tons of laughter, rides, and just good ol' fun!" said Adam Lowy, Executive Director and Founder of Move For Hunger.

The event helped raise $42,000 to fight hunger in New Jersey and nationwide which will provide more than 100,000 meals to those in need.

Lowy continued, “In the Garden State over 800,000 people and 1 in 10 children don’t know where their next meal is coming from. We are very appreciative of the support from an amazing partner in our local community. Hosting this event and spreading awareness has been an absolute thrill ride.”

We also couldn’t have done it without the help of our sponsors: Komatsu, Schwartz Truck Center, Voyager, Ekman Recycling, Waste Management, Withum, Conner Strong & Buckelew, VAN DYK Recycling Solutions, ESPOSITO CONSTRUCTION LLC, Hoffman EquipmentPantano Outdoor Supply, NH Kellman, Commercial Insurance Associates, Ansell Grimm & Aaron Foundation, Littler, Fire Rover, OnTime Driving Service, Faltech Industries, Construction Industrial Equipment Corp, Blackbridge investments, P House Signs, Bollerman, SIMS Metal, and Comerica Bank.

And last but certainly not least, the dream team that made us all look and sound professional: DJ NJ SINGS , emcee Kimberly Jade Kravitz and photographer Tom Zapcic

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
