The Suddath Companies Collect 12,000+ LBS. of Food During Nationwide Food Drive

May 30, 2017

The Suddath Companies recently joined Move For Hunger as a partner in our fight against hunger and food waste. To kick-off the partnership, food drives were held at Suddath locations nationwide during the company's Employee Appreciation Week from April 1-7. The results exceeded all expectations.

The Seventeen locations collected an astounding 12,590 pounds of food -- which is enough to provide nearly 10,500 meals to those in need. One of Suddath's standout locations in Jacksonville, Florida provided half of the donations alone by collecting 5,300 pounds of food!

"We wanted to do something that touched every one of our branches across the country,” said Michelle Dopps, senior manager of Suddath Jacksonville, of their nearly 30 locations. “Our employees brought in food to donate and it ended up back in their communities."

Each location personally delivered the donations to local food banks. The Jacksonville employees were overwhelmed by the response that the Mandarin Food Bank volunteers had when they arrived.

"When we filled our truck up and headed to the Mandarin Food Bank, I was thinking we could have done more and that it wasn’t enough," Dick Eschbacher, president and general manager of Suddath Jacksonville told The Florida Times-Union. “When we got there the volunteers had tears in their eyes because it was such a meaningful donation.”

The Suddath Companies celebrated this proud moment and created a training video to help the other branches do the same; check it out here!

More than 42 million people in the United States are experiencing food insecurity today. Thanks to the Suddath Companies, more than 10,000 meals were provided to those in need!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
