Student Move Out Donations Propels Cambridge at Southern to Community of the Month

October 15, 2021

Every month, Move For Hunger chooses a community that displays a huge dedication to end hunger. This month, Cambridge at Southern, in Statesboro, Georgia was awarded Community of the Month.

The Scion Group property collected 770 pounds in their participation through student-living move-out donations alone! Properties normally collect food through one of our many food drives or they collect food when residents move out. Each year, Cambridge at Southern hosts students during their summer, normally for internships, and collects food when they all move back to school.

What makes this so great is how the Scion Group has been great partners with us in the past! Over the past few months, The Scion Group has collected food over 20 student move-outs at their properties across the country, Altogether they brought a total of 3,630 meals.

"(We like to) introduce our community of students to the importance of serving the community where they live," said Taylor Williams from Cambridge at Southern. "Our residents believe in the value of serving one another and giving back to those around us. Our team has made an effort to ensure that our community of students understands the impact of Move For Hunger and that our efforts contribute to the health and wellbeing of others around us. We are so proud of our community and are thankful for the opportunity to be the community of the month."

We thank Cambridge at Southern, and they are not alone as multiple properties have helped this year. We cannot wait to continue working with them because to fight against hunger we need all hands on deck. In Georgia, 1.3 million people are food insecure, so about 1 in 8 people.

We are thrilled with the results of their work. Want to help fight hunger? You can join our multi-family network.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
