Spread the Love for Matthews Reserve, July’s Community of the Month

August 3, 2021

Matthew's Reserve (CLT).jpgEvery month, Move For Hunger honors a community that works towards fighting hunger and this month, Matthews Reserve is awarded Community of the Month.

This past month Matthews Reserve, part of Greystar Southeast, collected nearly 800 pounds of food, or about 660 meals, for the Spread the Love Food Drive! They have been a member of Move For Hunger for two years and consistently promote the program. This food drive was part of Greystar Southeast’s Peanut Butter & Jelly Pyramid Food Drive campaign, which amongst all properties has collected more than 6,100 pounds of food.

Thanks to CORT Charlotte for transporting the food to Loaves & Fishes in Charlotte, a nonprofit emergency food pantry that enables patrons to have some choice in the foods they eat each week. CORT offers a multitude of services including furniture rentals and apartment finding and is one of our best multi-family industry partners. CORT Charlotte has already moved over 2,700 pounds of food this year - more than double what they moved in all of 2020!CortFurnitureRental_Logo-1650x650.png

"The motivation behind partnering with Move For Hunger is mainly so we can give back to our community and help those in desperate need of assistance during this crisis," said Melissa Gibson, a Community Manager at Matthews Reserve. "With the pandemic and global crisis that’s currently present we feel that it is imperative that we work closely with our local food banks to provide resources for those who have been heavily impacted. We are so fortunate to be part of a team and company that believes in giving back to the those in need. We appreciate everyone’s’ initiative and dedication to BE THE CHANGE!!"

In North Carolina, more than 1 in 8 or 1,417,440 people struggle with food insecurity and in Mecklenburg County, about 1 in 10 or 115,580 people face hunger. The COVID-19 pandemic played a huge role in hunger; for example, Loaves & Fishes supported over 120,000 people in 2020 - a lot more than the more than 80,000 they helped the year prior.

We are so grateful for the support from Matthews Reserve in the fight against food insecurity. If you are interested in supporting Move For Hunger, please be sure to check out the opportunities to donate, fundraise, or start a food drive

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
