Sherwood at Iron Point Apartments named Community of the Month for February 2023

March 21, 2023

Each month, Move For Hunger chooses a community that displays a dedication to ending hunger. For this February, Sherwood at Iron Point Apartments was awarded Community of the Month!

Sherwood at Iron Point residents donated 820 lbs of nonperishables throughout February. This will provide 985 meals to the River City Food Bank in Folsom, California.  Thanks to CORT for transporting the donations!

"Our property management company, FPI's mission statement is grounded in the acronym HEART (Humility, Excellence, Accountability, Respect, and Teamwork),” said Cindy Moore, Community Director. “Partnering with Move For Hunger is in alignment with these core values. We gratefully serve our community on a regular basis by leasing homes and providing services to our Residents, vendors, and team members.”

Sherwood at Iron Point Apartments, an FPI Management property, has been a partner with Move For Hunger since 2018. Since joining our network, they have collected nearly 1,750lbs of donations, equalling over 1,300 meals, for local food insecure communities.

Moore continued, “To serve those who are less fortunate or have fallen on hard times is an absolute honor. And, to do it at a larger scale where there are multiple corporations participating and contributing is extremely heartwarming to experience and be a part of."

In California, more than 3.5 million people are food insecure, with over 1 in 8 children not knowing where their next meal will come from. We’re beyond grateful for every community that has joined us in the fight against hunger!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
