SEPTEMBER 2020 MOVER OF THE MONTH: NELSON WESTERBERG OF ILLINOIS

October 14, 2020

Each month, we highlight one of our moving companies in our network for their extraordinary commitment to fighting hunger in their community. We are excited to announce that Nelson Westerberg of Illinois has been named our September 2020 Mover of the Month!

Nelson Westerberg of Illinois has been involved with Move For Hunger since early 2012. Throughout their time as members, they have held countless food drives, participated in our race team, and delivered thousands of pounds of food to their local food bank.

During the month of September, Nelson Westerberg of Illinois teamed up with Sodexo to transport 139 pallets of food to the Greater Chicago Depository on behalf of Sinai Community Center. They traveled from Michigan to Illinois to deliver 6 trailer loads of food. This resulted in collecting an incredible 160,000 pounds of food enough to feed 133,000 people.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic food banks have seen more demand than ever before. It is because of moving companies donating their time, like Nelson Westerberg, that families will have meals on their table.

We are so honored to have Nelson Westberg of Illinois as a part of our moving network. Now is the time more than ever that we need dedicated moving partners like them. Congratulations on being our September 2020 Mover of the Month!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
