September 2020 Community of the Month: 121 Towne Apartments

October 9, 2020

Move For Hunger is proud to announce that 121 Towne Apartments, a Greystar community, has been named our Community of the Month for September 2020!

Since joining our  Multi-Family Program in February of 2019, 121 Towne Apartments has collected and donated 598 pounds of food which equates to 498 meals for those in need.

During Hunger Action Month this September, 121 Towne Apartments collected and donated 270 pounds of food during their National Food Bank Day Food Drive. This is the largest donation that they have collected thus far! All of the food was delivered to the Connecticut Food Bank by our incredible partners at CORT Connecticut providing 225 meals for the community.

Jennifer highlights the significance of giving back to the community especially as the need for Emergency Food Assistance continues to increase due to the negative impacts of the COVID-19 Pandemic. Giving back to those in need has always been important to us and even more so now during this difficult time.” said Jennifer Ravis, Community Manager for 121 Towne Apartments. “We were overwhelmed by the generosity of the 121 Towne residents and are proud to be a part of this community.”

Collaborative efforts such as this one leave a lasting effect not only on the community being supported, but also on those who have particpated in the effort as well. As we repsond to the implications of COVID-19 we must continue to emphasize community efforts as a key component in addressing food insecurity in the United States.

Jennifer states “our most recent food drive had a positive impact on our community, team and residents. We couldn’t have done it without the assistance of Move for Hunger.” We are so thankful for the passion and dedication that the residents and staff have shown towards making a difference in their communities!

Congratulations to the residents and staff  of 121 Towne Apartments and a big thank you to the CORT Furniture Rental Connecticut branch team for their continuous support and commitment to our mission of fighting hunger and food waste!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
